Yerevan has the best, and worst, drivers I have ever seen. In the three weeks we spent in the city, I never witnessed any accidents, although I did see the aftermath of such incidents. There were times when I believed we would be in a car accident. A few of these close encounters occurred in roundabouts where traffic would slow to a stop as drivers approached the same area at full speed. One time, our driver was cut off on this road and pursued the other car for a few minutes before dropping us off at our destination.
There are also different edicates for drivers to follow in Yerevan. For example, pedestrians do not have any “right of way.” There is also an unspoken way to driving through an intersection without traffic lights. It takes a combination of bravery and maneuverability where one wrong move can jam the intersection. Also, vehicles would often not slow down when approaching crosswalks, even when people are trying to cross. The roads outside Yerevan also pose a challenge to drivers as they are poorly maintained. Coming back to America, I noticed the lack of horns in use on the streets, and the steady movement of traffic. I found the car rides in Yerevan exciting as I never knew what I would experience next.
