2020 brings a new chapter for the LION Program at Stonehill College. As our four courageous young LION scholars embark--amid the COVID-19 Pandemic--on virtual (or remote) internships with major NGOs in Yerevan, Anna Ohanyan and I sat down for a Zoom discussion and webinar with host Adrian Erlinger, Senior Program Manager, Innovation and Capacity Building, at the American Councils for International Education. We discussed the origins and recent history of the LION Program and the challenges and rewards of institutionalizing and sustaining programs like this over time. The intended audience for the webinar was educators from the region, particularly in Georgia and Armenia, with the goal of opening new pathways for international study in the Caucasus. How can we reframe international study to shift the focus away from enhanced tourism, a default modality deeply entrenched in American institutions, toward significant learning in developing countries, which, among other things, can be living laboratories for critical thinking and innovation in humanities and the social sciences? How can we extend our network, build alliances and consortia, and generate synergy with our colleagues in the region? We are excited to make connections and to continue the discussion!
